Paper Minecraft Overview
Welcome to Paper Minecraft, the legendary 2D fan-made browser adaptation of the world's most popular sandbox game. Originally created by Scratch developer Griffpatch, this online browser version converts the deep, limitless 3D survival game into a highly optimized, fully featured 2D side-scroller. You can explore, mine, craft, and build in massive, randomly generated worlds directly from your web browser, with no downloads or signup required.
Despite being a 2D side-scroller, Paper Minecraft captures all the gameplay components that made the original Minecraft a global phenomenon. Players can choose between Survival Mode, where they must gather resources, manage their hunger bar, and fend off hostile mobs in the dark, and Creative Mode, which provides infinite resources and flight to build master structures.
Paper Minecraft delivers the block life in a 2D form. You gather, craft, build, and fight in a world you shape yourself. Start small with a dirt hut and end up with a full castle and mine system. Every session gives you something new to try.

Gameplay & Game Modes - Paper Minecraft
When starting a new session in Paper Minecraft, you can customize your experience using many features:
- Survival Mode: The ultimate challenge. Start with nothing, punch trees to gather wood, build a shelter, search for coal and iron ore, and construct defenses to survive the nightly attacks from Creepers, Zombies, and Skeletons. Night brings trouble. Zombies shuffle out. Skeletons shoot arrows if you get close. You need a safe spot before dark hits. Dig into a hill or stack dirt and wood into walls. Light the inside with torches you craft from sticks and coal. Sleep in a bed once you gather wool from sheep to skip the night. Monsters hit hard if you stand still. Learn their patterns. Zombies burn in daylight. Creepers blow up if they get too near. Build distance and use your sword smart.
- Creative Mode: Creative takes the pressure off. Grab any block you want. Fly by holding space or whatever the controls show. Place and break blocks without limits. No hunger, no damage, no night threats. Many players build villages, roller coasters out of rails, or huge pixel art on the walls. Share your world file with friends and they can walk through what you made.
- Peaceful Difficulty: Perfect for sandbox enthusiasts who want a survival experience without worrying about hunger or monsters spawning in the dark.
- Skins & Characters: Choose between Steve and Alex skins before initializing your world.
Tips and Tricks
- Night Safety: Your absolute first priority in Survival Mode is building a basic shelter before night falls. If you can hunt sheep to craft a bed, you can sleep to bypass the dark, dangerous night entirely. Start survival by punching trees right away. Collect as much wood as you can before night. Make a sword quick so you can fight back. Hunt animals during the day for food. Cook it so you get more health back. Save some for hard times.
- Mining Safely: Never dig straight down! Just like in the full 3D game, digging directly below you can cause you to fall into lava pools or high-damage cave drop-offs. When you mine, bring extra torches and food. Mark your path with blocks so you find your way out. Coal lights up the dark fast.
- Dig a Small Shelter: Dig a small shelter first night instead of something fancy. Three blocks high and a door works fine. Add torches on the walls to keep mobs away.
- Exporting Worlds: Save your world with the O key. Pause with P if you need a break. The game remembers your spot so you can come back later.
